Synopsis :

[FR] Das Boot est sans doute la plus belle et la plus forte histoire d’un sous-marin et de son
équipage jamais racontée au cinéma. Ce film culte est adapté d’un roman lui même inspiré de
la véritable histoire de l’U-96, l’un des U-Boote de Hitler les plus redoutables et les plus
redoutés. C’est cette véritable histoire, qui non seulement a nourri la fiction, mais aussi la
dépasse par bien des aspects, qui est ici dévoilée pour la première fois à l’écran. Avec les
participations exceptionnelles, parmi d’autres intervenants, du tout dernier survivant de l’U-96,
son ingénieur principal de bord, Friedrich Grade, aujourd’hui âgé de 106 ans, ainsi que
d’Enrique Lehmann-Willenbrock, le fils du capitaine de l’U-96 dont le personnage fut interprété
à l’écran par Jürgen Prochnow, mais aussi d’Yves Buchheim, le fils franco-allemand du
reporter de guerre du Reich qui participa à la 7e patrouille de combat de l’U-96 et écrivit
ensuite Das Boot. Le tout complété par d’étonnantes archives montrant Petersen et Prochnow
lors de la sortie du film. Des regards uniques sur ce célèbre film qui l’éclairent d’une lumière
inattendue, permettant de mieux comprendre ce qui en fait quelque chose de si spécial. Le
tout accompagné d’archives photographiques et cinématographiques jamais vues depuis la fin
de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dignes d’un film d’action, mises en regard des images de Das
Boot, pour comprendre à quel point ce dernier est indirectement inspiré des images de la
propagande allemande et leur doit une large partie de son efficacité cinématographique et de
sa force visuelle.

[EN] Das Boot is arguably the most beautiful and powerful story of a submarine and its crew ever
told in cinema. This cult film is adapted from a novel based on the true story of U-96, one of
Hitler’s most fearsome and feared U-Boats. It is this true story, which not only informed the
fiction, but also goes beyond it in many respects, which is revealed here for the first time on
screen. With the exceptional participation, among other interviewees, of the very last survivor
of the U-96, its chief engineer, Friedrich Grade, now 106 years old, as well as Enrique
Lehmann-Willenbrock, the son of the captain of the U-96 whose character was interpreted on
screen by Jürgen Prochnow, but also Yves Buchheim, the French-German son of the war
reporter of the Reich who participated in the 7th Combat Patrol of U-96 and later wrote Das
Boot. All complemented by amazing archival material showing Petersen and Prochnow when
the film was released. This is a unique look at Wolfgang Petersen’s acclaimed film, casting an
unexpected light on it, providing insight into what makes it so special. Supported by
photographic and cinematographic archives never seen since the end of the Second World
War, worthy of an action film, which, when put next to the images of Das Boot, help us
understand how the latter is indirectly inspired by images of German propaganda and owes
them a large part of its cinematic effectiveness and its visual force.
