• [FR]      En 1912-13, Gaston Méliès, frère de Georges Méliès, entreprend un voyage cinématographique de dix mois l’emmenant depuis San Francisco jusqu’en Polynésie, en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Australie, à Java, au Cambodge, pour finir au Japon. Il tourne 64 films qui sont les parmi les premiers jamais filmés à Tahiti, mais aussi à Angkor. Il est aussi le premier à confier de vrais rôles aux Polynésiens, Maoris, Aborigènes et Cambodgiens. Il meurt peu après, en 1915, tombant rapidement dans l’oubli. À l’occasion du centenaire de sa mort en 2015, ce documentaire rend hommage à ce pionnier de la fin des premiers temps du cinéma, et à ce grand voyageur du Septième Art. Les rares images qui ont survécu du voyage de Méliès sont aussi l’occasion d’une réflexion sur l’altérité, la représentation et l’identité.
• [EN]      In 1912-1913, while his brother Georges Méliès was still filming imaginary trips in his Parisian studio, Gaston Méliès undertook a ten-month long trip around Asia-Pacific, taking him with a team of about 15 collaborators from San Francisco, to Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Java, Singapore, Cambodia, and Japan. During this cinematographic adventure, he produced no less than 64 fiction and non-fiction movies, including some of the first ever shot in Java, Cambodia and Singapore (where he spent one month, in January 1913, filming in Chinatown, Little India and Pasir Ris). Moreover, Gaston Méliès was most likely the first filmmaker to give fiction roles to Tahitians, Maoris, Aborigines, Javanese and Cambodians. He did not return to the USA but travelled straight back from Japan to France, where he died shortly after, in 1915, quickly falling into oblivion, as the world was engulfed in World War I. On the occasion of the centenary of his death, tribute is here paid to this long-forgotten pioneer of the last days of early cinema, while taking the few surviving images of his voyage as an opportunity to reflect upon questions of alterity, identity and representation.
