[FR] Italia, Le Feu, La Cendre est un film entièrement composé d’images d’archives tournées en Italie entre 1896 et 1930, dont la plupart n’ont jamais été montées depuis leur sortie en salles, au début du XXe siècle.
Conçu sous la forme d’un essai lyrique et onirique, ce documentaire retrace la naissance du septième art dans une Italie à peine unifiée, de ses premières images jusqu’au parlant et la chute dans le précipice du fascisme. Cette industrie cinématographique florissante a donné naissance au péplum, fait éclore les premières stars, que l’on nommait alors des dive et révélé des cinéastes qui se sont forgés un style en s’inspirant des oeuvres les plus en vogues de l’époque, que ce soit en peinture, en littérature, au théâtre ou à l’opéra. Dans ses fastes, ses délires romantiques, son goût pour l’excès, pour la littérature decadentiste de D’Annunzio, pour le symbolisme et la musique de Verdi, ce cinéma a bénéficié d’une renommée internationale, fascinant les foules et les artistes dans toute l’Europe, et bien au-delà, jusqu’aux États-Unis et en Amérique Latine.

[EN] Italia, Fire and Ashes is a movie entirely made up of archive footage filmed in Italy between 1896 and 1930, most of which have never been shown to the public since their theatrical release, at the beginning of the 20th century.
Designed as a lyrical and dreamlike essay, this documentary goes back to the beginnings of cinema, not long after the unification of Italy, from its first images to talking films and the fall into fascism. That flourishing film industry created peplums, revealed the first film stars, then called divas, and filmmakers who established a style based on other popular art forms of that time, such as painting, literature, theatre, or opera. In all its splendor, its romantic fantasies, its penchant for extravagance, for Annunzio’s Decadent literature, for symbolism and for Verdi’s music, that cinema received worlwide acclaim, captivating audiences and artists all over Europe and above, reaching the United States and South America.
